This paper considers the formation and characteristics of Southeast Asian consumptive ethnoscape around Tao-Yuan railroad station. The Tao-Yuan County, which gathers the largest population of Southeast Asian migrant workers, is the major industrial region of Northern Taiwan. The author traces the urban development of Tao-Yuan City and tries to embed the emergence of the ethno-consumptive space for migrant workers into the urban process. The article then expounds several issues around two sets of concepts—politics of space and dis/placed identification. What kinds of social tension and conflict are derived from the formation of ethnoscape? And how do these tensions and conflicts appear as contention about uses and meanings of space? What is the relation between the formation of consumptive ethnoscape and the negotiation of dis/placed identities? And how do the appropriation of urban consumptive space and pursuing of leisure activities become social practices for marking self and collective identities? And the author also considers the implications of restaurants run by foreign spouses for ethnic identity formation and ethnic social network.
